Remove it from the engine, take it to an auto radiator repair shop for service. Advice suggested by Mack Boring, Yanmar distributor in NJ.

Our most excellent radiator shop cleaned the heat exchanger, refinished all the sealing surfaces and repainted for a total of $170. Pankeys Radiator in Hayward CA.

I put in all new studs, O rings and seals. Very pleasing outcome.

New large O-rings and end cap gaskets for sure.. if you want to do it yourself, Pull the bundle of tubes and use a pistol or rifle cleaning metal brush to clean out the tubes.. since the seawater is on the inside of the tubes, all the fouling should be on the tube ID side. The outsides of the tubes see clean coolant so it should be fine if the coolant has been maintained over the years.

I second Kloudie's method. The rife (22 caliber) cleaning rod and brush does an excellent job of cleaning crud & scale from the inside of the tubes and be sure to replace the gaskets and O rings. The hard part is removing the exchanger. Very easy to clean and reinstall.
