Regular generator or Dynastart?

I just got a message from the previous owner of my boat, Victor. He is planning to come down to the boat tomorrow and install the original Dynastart (sorry if that isn't what it is called, writing from memory).

The current set up is the MD6A with a regular car generator. Victor says it generates like 29 amps when running. He says the original unit that serves as both generator and starter generates far less current. He made it sound like it generates not enough current. To start the engine now, I have to hand crank it. Not too fun but doable.

Am I making a mistake by having him put the Dynastart back in?

Actually, looking at the MD6A engine manual, it looks like you can instal both the starter/generator AND an optional generator at the same time.

The generator that is on the engine now is mounted (as you face the engine) on the left upper area of the engine. There is also what looks like a place on the right mid area to mount the starter/generator. On the flywheel, there are spaces for two or more vee belts.

Is the mid/right area where the starter/generator should be?
Maybe the generator that is on the engine now can be left there and the original starter/generator added back in?

My MD6A is configured with two separate charging
systems. I'm not entirely sure if this was the normal
setup for my 1974 Vega or this was an optional add-on.
The Dynastart acts as a starter and once the motor is
running, charges the starter battery. Running next to
that off a separate belt is a thirty amp alternator
which charges the house battery. There is a separate
battery switch for each system. They are configured is
such a way that both switches must be in the "on"
position when starting the engine.
