Registration numbers on Hypalon

Just purchased a new hypalon dingy and was wondering how the registration numbers go on this material.

Talking with the graphics department at BoatUS, he said it's a hit or miss thing. Depending on how often I inflate and deflate the vinyl might come off. He then stated it might be better to paint them on.

What does the collective wisdom think? vinyl or paint the numbers.

I discovered too late that the way to go is with a permanent marker.
If you are not artistically inclined you can buy cut out stencils.
The problem is what to do with the state sticker. Some suggest putting it on the transom. Those who have, have not been stopped or ticketed. As pointed out by the CG they are not there to ticket but to inform.

I put my state sticker on with one of the square rubber things, seems to work pretty well, and just write my numbers on the hull with a magic marker, refresh once a year.

After losing various placards, rubber letters etc. I use the permanant marker, a nice wide Sharpie is good and use a stencil, make it look good. I put the registration stickers on the engine cover, not technically legal, but no one has ever objected.

Special Paint

I use some kind of "special paint" from the marine stores with stencils. Works good and comes off with solvents if you move to another state. I've always just stuck the decal on the hypalon but found in the past few years it peels off in the sun. Now I carry it with me in a zip loc bag along with the registration. The little square thing sounds like a good idea but what material is it made of? If it is hypalon it doesn't give you anything the boat itself provides.

My local boat graphics store in Eastport/Annapolis makes numbers especially for dingy use. They cut it out of a nylon-ish material with some type of adhesive back. Peel and stick. Clean the surface with alcohol first. They include two stick-on squares to mount the state stickers on.... I was going to be on Cobb Island for a wake today, but I'm under the weather.

I have my State sticker clearly visible on the transom of my Achilles. Never had a problem in Florida. I have been advised by the Marine Patrol that it is not a problem considering the dingy. Of course, this may be officer specific but my take was that it is acceptable under that circumstance.

Painting the numbers adds a small degree of security against theft. Depending on the amount of use they may need to be repainted yearly. The main problem is attaching the registration sticker behind the portside numbers as required by the regulations. I just strech the point a bit a bit and place the sticker on the transom.

I painted the registration # on the inside of the transom and on the hard floor, under the floorboards. In the plan is to put it on the engine under a layer of epoxy.

The paint method works well. It is a water born vinyl. I applied it to a zodiac and it was still fine 10 yeard later. Use the piant to make a square onto which you affix your sticker. Works reasonably well. The recommended solvent is acetone.The kits are available from Boaters World for 12.99 or Worst Marine for 17.99. Yeah. HUH??? Your choice.

I just bought paint only from them, $6.00 each for a little (about 1/2 ounce) container. I have plenty of stencils from last time.

I see I didn't specify, but that's in ADDITION to the bow numbers. An additional anti-theft effort. Sorry. I've been sick.

Put these on last year and they have worked out just fine. You have to buy hypalon glue and clean with acetone prior to putting them on.

Update

Talked to the people at Accent Graphics yesterday and I'm going with their solution. I still want to talk to Maryland DNR about the sticker and its placement.
