Well folks, my delivery date is the 15th and I have a question for you old timers. Where do I register my boat to get numbers for it? As you can tell this is my first boat in VA. I'm near Fairfax VA. Thanks in advance, Mark

Its probably going to be in Maryland waters so see if you can register it in Annapolis at the DNR (Dept Natural Resources). No property tax in Md... and congratulations.

VA registration

If you are going to keep your boat in VA... Go to Virginia game and fisheries dept. They are online, you can print the forms and mail them in. Sorry I don't have their website. I found it through Yahoo state govt listings. Mike

Va vs MD

When we got our H356 last fall '02, we examined very closely where to keep our boat. There are trade offs for both. Depending on the county in VA you could be paying property tax, which can be significant. It's not where you register home port but where the boat is slipped. A very important thing. Three counties in VA along the Potomac were charging about $4.00/100 dollars of NADA value, every YEAR. Some counties in VA are not charging property tax for boats but are in the Norfolk, Portsmouth VA area. Now in Maryland they only charge a one time 5% of the NET purchase price or use the NADA to access the value if more than three years old and coming in from out of state. Documenting the vessel will not change any of the above. Fairfax county does not charge property tax but there are no large marina's that can handle sailboats, plenty of powerboats and small sailboats. A Friend, registered his boat in VA but keep it in Maryland fought with Maryland and finally had to pay the 5% less what he had to pay VA which is 2% of sell price. Hope some of this helps. Potomack is Md water

Its generally true that the sales tax is higher in Md but the property tax is lower. Fairax does tax boats, although at a special rate of one cent per $100. Trailers and outboards, however, are at the usual 4.57 per 100. You are also correct that there are no real marinas on the upper Potomac, hence my assumption he would be in Md waters. I guess I'm prejudiced; I get the feeling Md takes pride in its boating 'industry', whereas in Va its just another recreational vehicle.
