does anyone know what it takes to register a new inflatable boat with CA DMV? I heard that you need to take it to some CHP for inspection then make another trip to DMV to register. sounds like a pita. I'm looking to buy an intex seahawk from amazon or ebay and might put a small outboard later on.

For my Porta Bot all I had to do was take down my purchase documents to DMV, fill out the form, and paid my money. Call for an appointment time it will save you a LOT of time in line.

While on a raft-up, I asked the same question. I was told that inflatables under 8' do not need to be registered, even if they have a motor. They are considered yacht tenders. I know the DMV website says differently, but this person tried to register and they were denied.

Current fees are like $49 during odd years and $19 during even years. Go figure... that's California for you. LOL

I have a 2.5 on my 7' dinghy and have no problems so far. Harbor police have even waved at me. Haven't been stopped yet.

If you are a AAA member, use their services vice DMV. Might be less painful.

if you are in san diego, must register every single motorized dink no matter the size--they are fascists there about this.
just take all your papers to dmv, tell em you want to register a small boat, they will hook ye up and take your dough. you will get for this, numbers to place on your boat--you provide the sticky stuff or paint or magic marker, and you get a title and a paper of registration which you should carry every time you use the dang dink....

All you need is the bill of sale. If you can't prove you paid sales tax on the purchase, be ready to pay that as well. As for the fees, they are going up, from $10 a year paid every two years, to $20 a year paid every two years (that's probably why the difference in odd and even years). And if you can, use a DMV that is close to a marina. They are use to registering dinks, others get confused.

Motorized dinks in California have to be registered. There is no exception to tenders to documented vessels.

The Yacht Tender exemption for most States only applies in cases of emergencies. It can be kind of hard to explain the nature of the emergency on a beer run. Some communities are lax about enforcement but others are real sticklers especially in these economic times.

We have used our dink for rafting on the Snake River, lakes in Montana, inland lakes in California etc and having it reqistered makes all the questions go away so worth doing in my opinion.

Gosh, I hope there was some sales tax included that turned a $10 sticker into $168 !!!
