Run by the US coast guard. Their web site has answers to all your questions. And if not, their support staff have always been helpful when I have needed to call them on the phone. You will probably also need to pay a fee to PR, if it is like the states. Check with the local tax collectors office.

Yes Ruben, you can

I bought my boat in France and documented it under American Flag there while I sailed in the Med. I don't remember all the different papers that had to be filled because I paid a company to do it: New England Marine Documentation Service. (781) 721-4500 www.boatdoc.com It was not cheap, but for $450 they contacted the manufacturer in France and had all the paperwork done. The actual USCG fee was only $141 but, given my ignorance on those matters, it was worth it for my peace of mind. The other thing you may want to consider is the import and sale taxes that you may need to pay upon arrival to the US. In some states you may be able to save the sales tax if you keep and use the boat for six months outside of the state before you bring the boat.. Buena suerte y buena mar. Jose Felicitaciones

I believe you must be a US citizen!

I am not sure of this, but I believe that you must be a US citizen to own a documented vessel in the US.

Yes, you must be US citizen to document,

however the definition of citizen also seems to include corporate entities. The following is from the FAQ part of Vessel Doc. Center website: HOW DO I ESTABLISH U.S. CITIZENSHIP? Citizenship is established by completion of form CG-1258. In addition to individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other entities capable of holding legal title may be deemed citizens for documentation purposes. Corporations must be registered in a state or the U.S; the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors must be U.S. citizens, and no more than a minority of the number of directors necessary to constitute a quorum may be non-citizens. In addition, at least 75% of the stock must be vested in U.S. citizens for a coastwise or fisheries endorsement.
