The A/B unit on my '98 376 works, well, too good. The separate refigerator section consistantly freezes its contents. I replaced the thermastat in the freezer side last fall. The thermastat in the refigerator section is set on the lowest setting and it does cycle on and off the fan between the two compartments. The only thing I can think of, is the unit itself is not cycling on and off. Any ideas?

Me Too

I have the same experience on my P42. More than once I've had cans oc coke blow up in the fridge. even though it's set on the lowest setting. This week I tried moving the end of the sensor closer to a coil. I'll see what happens.

same here - 40.5

i guess this is a good problem to have....i rarely use my freezer because the bottom of my refridg unit freezes....i 've gotten in the habit of putting vegetables, etc on the top shelf

MFG?

I am following this thread with great interest since we will be purchasing a new H380 with refrigeration this spring. This will be our first encounter with such high-tech devices. My question to those with such problems is, what does Adler-Barber have to say about it?

Freezing

Could it be that there is a lack of circulation in the box and the thermostat is sensing one temperature and the bottom of the box is another? I purchased one of those small caged 2D cell battery powered refrigerator fans that we used for a season and it made a big difference. How's that for pure speculation?

excess refrig.

I've had the same problem with every boat reefer I've ever used except once when on a custom boat with tons of insulation around the box. The owner thought that the extra insulation kept the compressor from running so much and freezing the stuff at the bottom. I wish I'd put more insulation around the box in my P420. The fan idea sounds great and I am going to give it a try.

376 Refrigeration

I was having a problem getting the freezer on my 376 to freeze even with the temp set on the coldest setting. Eventually after playing around with the temperature settings I discovered that the manual for my boat has the settings listed backwards. If you have your refrigerator temp set on the "warmest" setting you may in fact have it turned to the "coldest" setting. Try turning completely the other way for a few days and see what happens. I keep both settings about in the middle now and the fridge stays at about 36 (i put a thermometer in to keep an eye on it) and the freezer keeps everything frozen.

Test the T'stat

You can tet the thermostat with a glass of ice, water and a thermometer. Carefully insert the thermostat sensor tube in the glass of ice water. You should be able to rotate the setting knob back and forth and feel the contact click in and out. Also, you can test the thermostat by turning off the power, removing the leads from the terminal strip and using a continuity meter. (Have someone rotate the knob) The temperature of the water should between about 35 and 45 F. You can control it by adding more water or ice. If everything seems to be working with the thermostat, you must insure that the fan is actually cycling on and off with the setpoint of the thermostat. Our 376 had the same problem. The refrigerator fan was wired to the board and it ran constantly, causing freezing. I traced out the thermostat lines and made the correction and it now works fine. The power from the terminal must go to the thermostat, then back to the power leg of the fan and the other side of the fan pwer lead to the ground. (wiring diagram with documentation) If the refrigerator fan is cycling okay with the thermostat, check that the freezer 'stat is cycling the compressor on and off. Also, if the freezer is set way too cold, it could lead to a frozen 'fridge compartment. If all of this is functioning properly, damper down the opening between the freezer and the 'fridge that does NOT have the fan. Do this in small increments. Too much dampering could possible cause the fan to fail. About 50% should be the maximum. To damper the opening use a cutout piece of a plastic water bottle to make the opening smaller. This will cut down on the air circulation between the compartments therby raising the temperature of the 'fridge. Good Luck, Mike D.

Popsicle food?

I had a similar problem and I have noticed that other owners have asked similar questions. My 430 was a new 1996 model. When my refrigeration system cycled on and off continuously I went through the same process of elimination: changed thermostat, lowered the setting, called electrician, called the factory, called the manufacturer, etc. Finally, one night it came to me. The thermostat was OK ( I had chanded it already ) and the problem continued, so it had to be that the thermostat was not receiving the right information. I looked into how was the unit feedback loop installed. It had a thin, elongated tube (I do not know the technical name) which run along the plate and that was supposed to act as an antenna feeding back the temperature of the plate to the thermostat. I reinstalled that tubing making sure that it reached all the way to the part of the plate where the cooling ducts connect with the plate but without touching them. That is, at about one or two inches from the ducts themselves. The previous installation had the tubing midway accross the plate and obviously it was not doing the job it was supposed to do. Voila! problem solved. This may not be your case but I hope it helps somebody.

Freezing Refrigerator

On i first got my 430 I had the same problem, freezing cokes, milk, etc. It was easily corrected by elongating/stretching out the coil.

Check refregirator thermostat

I had the same problem on my new 376 1998. It was fixed when I replace the thermostat on the refregirator side since they had installed a freezer thermostat. So I had in fact 2 freezer compartiment with the compressor working allmost all the time. Never had any problem since then.
