I have a 1986 Catalina 34 with a Adler Barbour Cold machine DCM 12. It has been very reliable until recently. It stopped working a week ago. Fan worked then it would beep and go into its' protection mode. I shut it down and it still would not start up. After several attemps I gave up. Over the weekend I tried it again and it started working again for 2 days and then stopped working again. Now it has gone into its' protective mode. I have checked the voltage at the electronic module which checked out OK.
The thermostat appears to work. It sounds like the compressor does start up. I hear something circulating through the condencer inside the refrigerator. It does gurgle like there might be air in the line.
Does it need to be recharged. Can it be changed over to the new 134a refrigerant. I might have a can or two of the R-12 used on auto airconditioners with the charging hose. Will taht work? I do not want replace it if it can be repaired reasonably. A new complete unit compressor and condencer cost about $1500.
