Refrigeration Problem on Hunter 35.5

Just noticed that my refrigerator was not keeping things cool on our Hunter 35.5. I have not spent much time trouble shooting yet, but thought I would post to see if there is some ready advice. I have done the basics - compressor appears to be running (I can hear it), played with temp settings - no noticable change. Suspect it needs a Freon re-charge. Does this sound right, and is there any advise on likely suppliers of this service on a boat? Thanks.

Jon, sounds to me like a recharge is in order...

You might also post your article on the refrigeration forum so that Scot from WAECO can give you his recommendations. Terry

check the easy things first, is the condenser coil dirty? is the condenser fan running? after checking that, what is the suction or return line doing? is it cool and wet? if everything is ok, adn the line is not cool, then check your charge. the more you have gages hooked up to your system the more you lose charge, adn possable can contaminate the system.

yeah but,

Gauge's won't tell him his charge level. He needs a sight glass for that, (if no TXVs, forget it) or he has to vacuum the system with a scale. If he's running a hermetic compressor, shut it down. A low charge can burn it out. Then hire a pro.
