I am considering purchase of a 1999 HUN 410. I have read some reviews that complain about the refrigerator/freezer not operating properly. Something about it being water cooled and running all the time, thus draining batteries, and not making ice. Has anyone solved this problem? What is the solution? Thanks for feedback.

have the same boat -changed the compressor to air cooled disconnected water cooler,temp in the freezer stayes at -20deg. ref at 36 deg. works dust fine. Just love the boat Ken

410 reefer
I added a second compressor to mine so the reefer and freezer are independant systems. can keep ice cream frozen now. adding expanding isulation will also help. and second Ken's input its a great boat. Bryce

Too cool
I have a unique problem (maybe) on my 2002 410. It is air cooled and after 1-2 days my freezer builds a frost cabin. Actually it gets up to 1 inch thick after a few days. Not a big problem, but if I could figure out how to stop the frost and still cool ok. I have had 6 boats, which the last three have been Hunters. This 410 is easy to operate for my wife and me and just on good boat.

I have a 2000 410 with the water cooled system, depending on what the ambient air temp. is determines how well the refrig. system operates. We usually keep our meats etc on the freezer side with a block of ice to insure no spoilage. This is the system I am least satisfied with, otherwise love the boat. Would be interested to hear from Ken as to which compressor he switched to, did he change the cooling plates and did he do the work or have the boatyard do it. Good luck and keep us posted as to how you handle this issue.

Too Cool
If you have very quick frost build up, you likely have an air leak or two. Check the doors. Open them and look for condensation on the inside (a sure sign of an air leak). To locate insufficient seals, use a dollar bill. Close the door on the bill, then pull it out. If it comes out easily the seal is weak there. Hope this helps. Scott

too cool
Air leak sounds like something that Hunter had a problem with. When I brought my boat back from Ensenada, H&S in San Diego did some work to try to seal the frig/freezer. I will look at this closer and maybe I can try to fix the seal. Thanks..

Low charge
Fred, Just went through this on my Adler Barber. It looses it's charge about every 6-8 months and when it does it puts a large block of frost at the top of the plate but the rest of the plate is somewhat warm.. It was just charged this week and it is working just fine with the normal amount of frost. Vinny

Low Charge
A low charge will cause a plate to freeze up just as by the same principle an A/C unit's evaporator will freeze up with a low charge. The heat is removed via the condenser not the evaporator.

I wasn't aware that this model was rigged with a water cooled compressor. Our 2001 came with air cooling. Anyway, a couple of things to check. There's a small fan in the refrigerator section that is supposed to blow air from the freezer into the frig. Make sure it does this. Mine didn't. It is easy to turn around. Another is to make sure the plug is in place in the bottom of the refrig. Finally, I bought some insulation stripping at Home Depot and supplemented the seal around the top of the lids. This does a better job of keeping air out. I am very satisfied with the unit on our boat. It keeps ice nicely. I defrost it on a monthly basis. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

I've never seen that 'principal' on my system. Of course it's water cooled, hold over plate for the refer, separate system and plate for the freezer and separate air conditioner, all running from the engine driven compressor, SO I may not see the principal you speak of manifest itself. When my system is low on charge, it shows up in the sight-glass and with a lack of frost on the suction lines and plates. And dynamically on the built-in pressure gages. Did I mention that I built it? And I don't spend a lot of time with guys that know about this stuff anymore because I service my own system. I'm certified and buy my own gas. Did I mention that I have my own company? But that sure as hell doesn't make me an expert. Maybe Richard Kollmann is watching. Additionally my home A/C system is Geothermal. No external condenser and fan. I didn't build the sled though. I just installed it. I'm on my second one. Wore out the first. It's slick. Heats the house, the hot tub and our domestic hot water. Did I mention that the heat's free? And that it's A/C too? I can take some snaps. Anybody interested?
