I have an 12V Adler Barbour Compressor that is labeled combicold cc-20-AW that I believe to be original to my 1987 Hunter Legend. It has 2 cold plates mounted in the freezer with spillover to the frig. It worked well until now but it appears the compressor has given up. It has R12 refrigerant. I think I would prefer to replace the the compressor and keep my cold plates. Is this feasible? If so what type/size compressor can I use. If not feasible what system should I consider for replacement. The freezer and frig are approx. 5 cu ft each. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Generally, NO. Reason is that the evaporator and condensing units can't work with two different refrigerants.

You might want to consider reading Richard Kollman's website.

Stu is right on with his suggestions. But If you are experienced in refrigeration work you can replace the compressor if it's really bad.(pretty rare occurance) The cold plates may be, or can be compatibale with R134 but you may need to contact the mfg about what may be needed like a new TXVs (Thermostatic expansion valves. The trouble is,cost of just the condensing unit may be as high as a new system.

Thanks for the information and suggestions Stu and Denise. What type and size should I look for in a new system that would work as a freezer and refrig for my present 5 cu ft freezer and spillover to a 5 cu ft refrig.

Try either Kollman's website or Google WAECO for Adler Barbour's recommendations.
