I just purchased a 05 Hunter 36 with a refrigerator and a freezer both 12 volt. My question can I leave these on and stocked while at the dock on shore power. We are typically on the boat most weekends but not during the week and wanted to leave them on for convenience or are they made just for intermediate use

Walter,

We've done just that for the last 12 years (both on our Hunter 36 and our current 44) with no problem at all. The only thing to be aware of is if shorepower is lost the refrigeration load will transfer over to you house batteries. This is generally not a problem as long as the shorepower is restored within a reasonable period of time.

Just an obvious clarification on my previous post to be technically correct......the refrigeration system load is always powered by the 12 volt house batteries and Shorepower is supplying your your battery charger to keep your batteries charged.

As long as the battery charger can stay ahead of the fridge and any other loads that are left on, it's fine. Can't do that on my boat as we're on a mooring.

Mine leaks refrigerant if shut off. It will hold a charge for a couple years if left on full time. I do defrost when needed but never let it get warm.

Most 12v units are danfoss powered the controller unit auto turns off at 11 volts so if left unattended and dock power lost they will not kill your battery

Joe it sounds like you have a slow leak on the low side of your system.
