I am installing a battery charger, on our 1987 Hunter 31. I am considering placing it on the bulkhead next to the water suppy pump, there is also a Fram fuel filter mounted next to the pump. What configuratin have other people used and can the filter be moved in to the engine space. All idea's welcomed

Battery Charger

I Mounted my just to the left & below the Filter. Works well and easy access the Batterys & 120 volt. I Split my 120 line and put a plug in the compartment for my Ice Box and Battery Charge

Refit ADD

I installed a statpower smart charger on the quarter berth side of the partition, above the battery compartment. takes up no space and I can monitor it easily. I also installed a racor 220 on the back wall of the engine compartment. If you can't get to the equipment easily, you won't maintain it properly. Any thing you can relocate out of the starbord compartment is a plus.

Who needs me w/M. Kraus around?

Before responding I read M.Kraus' comments. Turns out he said exactly what I would have and did. Good advise too. Happy sailing. Doug

Same Thing

I also installed a smart charger on the bulkhead. That way I can monitor the LED's easily to make sure it is not stuck on full charge. One down side was that it ended up causing interference with the radio mounted on the opposite side of the bulkhead. One thing I also did was wire in a cutoff switch so that I can turn the charger off, eliminating the interference problem at dock.

Statpower placement

Frank: Just purchased the 40amp Statpower unit too. For an additional $40 you can have the remote unit that can be placed any where that you like. When I am in the PIT look fore to aft I have my charger, water pressure and my Racor filter (fram needs to go) all on the bulkhead. Once I get my fat ass down in the pit, it's relatively easy to work down there. Another option may be to mount it on the bulkhead over the icebox. I don't know if there is enough room there and it may need to be mounted sideways. Another place is under the chart table, I've seen this done too.

What about an access panel in bulkhead?

I too replaced my Fram fuel filter with a Yanmar(Racor) fuel filter. It has a nice little pump for bleeding fuel lines but it is hard to get to. Has anyone installed an access panel in the bulkhead to get into the lazaret from the aft berth? I am thinking about doing this. Are there any downsides? I also have trouble fitting through the hatch above the lazaret.
