Refitting An Oday-Rhodes 19

Hello All, this is my first post on here and I hope to make as few blunders as possible!

First, me and a buddy are working on a Rhodes-19 that we received as a hand-me-down from my friends grandfather. Currently, I'm replacing all the deck boards, the beams, and decorative paneling. Woodworking is not an issue for me, but there are a few other, more asthetic, issues that I would like to fix. Primarily fiberglass and vinyl lining work around the bulwarks and a severly cracked seat at the helm.

Anyways, my main reason for accesing this site was to try and find contact information for O'day so that I can get ahold of there owners manual and possibly schematics to double check what critical parts I am missing and so on. If you know the contact information, or have one or both of what I am looking for, I would be very grateful for you help.

Rudy at D&R is a GREAT resource! However, for "nitty-gritty" details on the RHODES 19, you may also wish to contact Stuart Marine in Maine, current builders of the RHODES 19. Unfortunately, O'DAY was not known for supplying the in-depth owners manuals that you mention (most builders didn't back then!) Most 1970's small O'DAYs came with a single-sheet (2-sided) rigging guide, it had text on one side, diagrams on the other.

Also check out the RHODES 19 Class Association web site www.rhodes19.org I suspect that you will find many diagrams there or at least a good source for the info that you seek.

I'm confused by what you mean by "decorative paneling", and when you say "bulwarks" do you mean the wooden cockpit coamings?

I've added a few pictures from my O'DAY Library, showing various Rhodes 19s. Sorry that a couple are a bit small!

I'm also restoring an early Rhodes 19 centerboard model. I was also going to suggest both D&R Marine and Stuart. The Rhodes 19 site has some articles on restoring a Rhodes 19, but there isn't much else. The forum gets very little response. You might try to see if there is a Rhodes 19 fleet near where you live, they my be able to answer questions.

Perhaps my use of the word bulwarks is inappropriate. I meant the vinyl lining around the edge of the boat. In some portions it is falling off. I've already devised a fix for this though. As for the decorative paneling, I meant the three wooden panels around the cockpit area.

The next stage in my refitting is finding a way to secure the beams to the bilges/bottom of the inside hull. It seems they used some kind of rock-hard glue to do this. Any idea's on this?

Sounds like your "bulwarks" would be the extruded rubber rub-rail, available from D&R Marine or Hamilton Marine.
By "wooden paneling", it sounds like you refer to the wooden cockpit coamings (the three "planks" that cover the edge of the cockpit perimeter), new ones are available from Stuart Marine, or you could just use the old ones as patterns and use mahogany boards (or white oak?) Some have used "ipe" (EE-PAY) wood in place of teak, or even TREX decking. Don't use plywood though, not even marine-grade, the exposed edge grain will delaminate the plywood.

The beams or floor timbers, should have originally been glassed in place. STUART Marine has those parts if you want to replace them, or again some good white oak or even pressure-treated wood could be used. Either way, I'd used epoxy resin and glass them in place. I think there was a thread on the R19 association web about those, or check the archives of this site.

The rub rail is the white rubber material that goes around the edges of the boat and is available from D&R Marine and Stuart Marine. D&R is less expensive. Both also sell the channel that the rub rail attaches to.

The cockpit coamings are available from Stuart Marine as Sunbird noted. If you use you old ones as a pattern, the originals would have been mahogany as are the floorboards.

The beams you refer to are the ribs. Stuart Marine sells those as well. There are articles on the Rhodes 19 Association site http://www.rhodes19.org/common/index.php?com=rhod&div=AA&nav=AA&page=A91 concerning how to replace the ribs. I'm currently in the process of replacing the ribs on my R19. I'm using mahogony rather than the oak that was originally used. I have a set of patterns that were traced from Stuart ribs. My drawings are for the centerboard model. The articles I've read suggest using 3m 5200 to bond the ribs in place. The ones I'm replacing from whoever did the last rib replacement were encased in fiberglass as well, so I channels to place my ribs in as well. The original ribs had nothes in them for fiberglass saddles to attach them to the hull. A friend of mine who recently did a rib job on his keel R19 said he didn't like using the 3M 5200, as he had problems with it.
