Hunter 1976 27' Sailboat Wilmington
I have a hunter 27' sailboat that i just purchased. It is a 1976 model and the deck looks constantly dirty. I have cleaned it with deck cleaner with no good results. I am new to boating and i'm not really sure where to start. the deck does have non skid on it and i would like to redo the whole deck so it looks as new and as presentable as possible. Where do i start do i need to strip it or way remove the non skid??? I am brand new to boating and this is a fixer up boat that i am working with. I'm not afraid of hard work i just need some advice on how to start on this deck.

Thanks.

Take a look at Kiwi Grip. It is sold on this website.

The worst part about any re-do of the non-skid is the masking and removal of hardware.

You might start with a good book or some boat painting articles like those by Don Casey over on Sailnet. The practice on some old fiberglass, maybe an old dinghy or just some plastic sheets.

I first painted the white, the coach roof and sides and the side decks, using Interlux Toplac. It makes cleaning so much easier, doesn't need wax, and looks good after six years. I didn't mask anything, just a steady hand along the toerail and around the hardware. I had one major advantage, my portlights were out as I was replacing them. Then I masked to get a good edge and painted on the non-skid. While painting the white I put down a center stripe about two inches wide. This was so I could do half the boat and keep a wet edge as I painted. I used Interdeck by Interlux but have since read good things about Kiwi Grip.
