The wooden strips on my Hunter 41 need to be refinished. Any ideas on how best to approach this project?

The Winter Time Project

Just this last weekend I removed the rail seats and the helm seat and brought them home. I do this every winter at this time. I will remove the strips and sand them and break out the Cetal. I have been using Cetal lite but have been told that there is a Cetal Clear now. Any way I put three coats on them, reassemble and take back to the boat. I then sand the grab rails and refinish them on the boat. It will last for one season in the hot Texas sun. I hate teak.

Look what I did last month. I hate teak too.

(outside that is) See photo's #128-132 on my web site for 'after shots'. Don't blame me, it was all Ron Mills' idea. :)

Trying to avoid sanding

Thanks for your response. That's what I was going to do, but I was told that there is an alternative to sanding the strips.

refinish teak

Instead of cetal I used Bristol Finish, its more expensive and takes longer to apply but it has lasted two and half years with out re-applying. Shes in a slip in Gulfport Fl.

Just finished mine this week.

Funny, you should ask. I removed the strips from the seat, lightly sand front and backs. I use Epifanes Wood Finish Gloss, was pleased with the the way they turned out. Time will tell how well they hold up to the the envirnoment. Have about 5 coats lightly sanded between each coat. Jim S/V Java

No teak

What we did was take the strips off altogether because we were sick of the constant maintenance. There is white plastic seat underneath and it never needs anything but a wash over every now and then. And you don't get a stripey bum when you sit on them!!! Cheers Bing

I'm with Bing...

I took the corner rail seats off and used them to cut new seats out of white starboard. I've got what Bing has (but without the old screw holes). Looks great and I've now only got one outside piece of teak to maintain, and thats on the companionway hatch under the dodger. I use the snap on seat cushions from this site on them, so you never saw the teak when using the boat anyway.
