I have a 2006 Hunter 33. In several areas, the finish on the tear veneer cabinetry is failing.

I would like to touch it up, but do not know the best way to do this. I assume it's not real varnish. If I fine sand those areas, do I then need to stain them? then apply a clear finish? What type?

It really does need a touch-up, not the very large job of re-doing everything.

Anybody got suggestions?

Hunter gave a touch up kit to new boat owners when we purchased our new boats and I have never used the spray yet but have used the daly's teak Oil supplied and need to order more from Daly's web site.
I know Hunter did change over from teak to Cherry wood some time after my 2007 H-36 but yours should be teak,I have used lemon oil also to clean and conidition my dried up wood also.
I did use a teak oil can't remember wwhich to re do the teak trim in around the head and looked like new, sorry is home in Florida and I am up in NY.

Re: Daly's

Check your owners manual. It should tell you what finish was used on the interior wood and what technique to use to restore it.

Syoun, I have a similar problem with my 2004 Hunter 33. What did you end up doing? From the (limited) information I could gather so far the finish on the teak veneer is indeed a varnish.

Briss,
I also have a 2004 H33 and i will also need to do some touch-ups on the veneer, the teak trim and the salon table. The manual explains the procedures to follow and the products to use. The products to use are listed here.

http://www.marlow-hunter.com/export/Miscellaneous/Cherry wood repairs.pdf

If you look at the H33 brochure, it states that the interior if a Cherry finish.

I've purchased all the Mohawk products i need to do the touch-ups. Now waiting for the weather to be able to do them.

I'd be very interested in hearing how project turned out and if you have any tips based on your experience as i won't be able to tackle this project for a few months.

Attached is information that I got from Hunter for my 2003 H44. Hope it helps. You may want to try an interior cabinet wall or door first to make sure it is compatible. I have purchased some products, but have not tried them. Lets see.....do woodworking or sail??? Sailing always wins. definitely need to accomplish it this spring.

Hopes this helps!

Thanks Meb135 and Schatzi,
I will order the products from Mohawk Finishing and do a test on the inside of a cabinet door.
Dave, I guess the teak oil would be best for the companionway, which has not been finished with a lacquer on my H33.

Schatzi,

You (or anyone else) wouldn't happen to have the actual product number of the stain/color and manufacturer that was used on your boat?

Marc:
I don't believe they are "stained". This is what Hunter told me (on attached document of my previous post)......

"1. Kitchen Rail, cabinets, walls (lacquer finish)- Top Coat - Mohawk #M102-0452 Precatalized Satin Lacquer, Ultra Flow Clear
2. Deep Scratches - Sanding Sealer 1-3 coats, Mohawk #M102-0423
3. Water in the wood - White milky look. Mohawk No Blush #M103-0476
4. Walls Cleaning - if lacquer finish use pledge lightly and if refinish is needed: Mohawk #M102-0452 Precatalized Satin Lacquer, Ultra Flow Clear"

Purchased from: David at: Industrial Wood Finishes 14622 Southlawn Lane Rockville MD 20850 301-424-3033 (Phone) www.industrial-finishes.com (Website)

I purchased two cans of M102-0452 but have not used it yet. Was advised to try it at an unseen space first, by someone else. Hope to find a warm day this spring to complete the touch up. It would be great if I could get it looking like new. Mostly looking to get rid of the scratches on the rail that surrounds the corian top.

On another note, I believe the stairs are just oil due to the wear and tear, and to avoid someone slipping.

If you try it, i would appreciate it if you let me know how it works out.

Steve
