I have a Hunter 31, 1985. I have cleaned the floor and oiled it but it still does not look as good as it should. What can I do to restore it to its best looking potential? Ned

try sanding and reoiling

clean all of the old oil off with a teak cleaner then sand it down and reoil it, you cant sand very much off though. The laminate on the top new wasn't much more than 1 mil thick. the rest is plywood that the teak and holly is laminated to. Hopefully it hasn't delaminated like mine did. I ripped it out and made my own sole out of solid teak and inlayed holly strips in it. Tim Welsh H34 AKA CABO WABO

Ultimate Sole

This site has complete instructions on refinishing your sole. I used it and the results are a lot better than I had even hoped.

We just finished the job.

We put in the refinished sole in my 336 last weekend. Looks like new. Hunter supplied a pint of "Seafin" teak oil with new boats in 95. We found the manufacture on the west coast(Dalys) and ordered two quarts. You will need to sand some of the bad spots out. We put on about 5 coats and it looks showroom new. Great product.

Oil or varnish?

Just a quick question for you guys - Is it better to oil the sole or varnish. When I bought my 34 a couple of years ago the previous owner had refinished the sole and varnished it.Its been like a skating rink ever since. Now the time is coming for me to refinish the sole I wonder if an oiled sole will provide more grip? Any ideas? I stripped the varnish off all the wood outside and used oil instead which I think looks much better. Andrew

Epiphanes Rubbed effect varnish

I did my floors this fall - took them all home and spread them out in the garage. I used a random orbital sander to take off the old finish 150 and a 250 finishing grit I believe. The Epiphanes is a satin finish which is more suited to a marine floor as it will not show the scratches. (versus a gloss finish) I believe I put 4-5 coats on thinned 50%/25%/15%/10%. The finish is excellent and appears very durable. My only problem was filling dings in the floor from dropped winch handles and other accidents. If I were to do it again I would just ignore the dings as after filling them they are just as noticeable if not more.
