So when you installed the paper you had the teak edging in place and timmed up to the teak

Yep I left the teak and used an xacto knife and cut the contact paper to fit exactly. within the teak edging.

Contact type paper would temporarilly improve the appearance of very worn countertops. But I don't think it would hold up very well long term in the marine environment. Salt air is very corrosive & loves to loosen up anything that is glued down. Perhaps the varnish will help to seal it, but only time will tell. Plus the glley counters get beaten by the sun on a C 30 when the main hatch is open, cause it's so big. Let is know if it starts to bubble up, or tears from wear down the road.....

I have seen stone veneers cut so thin they were flexible, as on some honeycomb structural laminates as seen at the boat builders show last week. One could consider a very thin stone laminate under epoxy and varnish. It would be pricey, but as described, durable, non-fading, UV stable and similarly easy to install.

Don't forget pricey though...

Home Depot carries an epoxy paint for refinishing counter tops in the home about $16 per at. I am considering using this in our boat. You can choose from different colors which they mix right there for you. I will start with our table and see how I like it first. I hate the table now anyhow...lol

great tips/feedback.. what I did to protect from UV is do a light coat of epoxy (to protect the contact paper from ripping up.. think of the bar tops at bars that have epoxy on them.. same concept, just a lighter coat.

then I did 3 coats of a uv/verathane to protect from yellowing/fading..

so far with doors/companionway open, spilled water, wet, wiping, heavy use-age, it's holding up well.. time will tell of course ;)

Does anyone think a polyurethane(Brightside) or, as suggested, an epoxy paint would work over the faux wood that I have on my 1980 C27? The countertop is in good shape just tired looking. I want to do something to update the countertop but don't want to make it a major project right now. Have many other things I want to spend time on first.

MW, on what type of existing countertop would you apply the epoxy paint?
