Refinish V-Berth

I am doing the same on my project boat. I am not using planking but this carbonized bamboo that is attached to a cloth backing. The carbonized bamboo has the color close to teak. I am doing all my walls with this stuff. The 4x8 vertical grain has thin strips. The 4x8 horizonal grain has wider strips. They also have 8x4 sheets with the strips running the 8 foot length. I am tabbing in any supports for shelves etc to the fiberglass and not to the wall covering so it's not an issue for me.

If you can find the project that Art Boas did on his Hunter it should give you some great guidance. His project looks like the factory did it.

I have tried searching in the projects but the search does not appear to be working correctly.

I also plan on using bamboo flooring. Costco has it 28 sq. ft./ $72. It's a 5/16" thick. It comes in 4 Ft lengths and planks are about 3 1/2" wide. I plan on using stingers to glue or screw to, haven't decided yet. I'll use thin flexible insulation between stringers.
The only concerns are using it in a moist environment. There are a lot of warnings, but I have a feeling they apply to most wood products. If anyone has experience with bamboo on a boat please share.
The thing besides the great look is that the planks at not laminated.
They have a carbonized finish and I have concerns about that too. I my refinish with marine varnish on both sides to prevent warping.

I am not sure that I would use anything that is bonded to a sub straight. I think that you would want a solid wood (bamboo is a grass product) that can recover from a moisture situation.

We actually had a flood on our bamboo floor and it warped but dried flat. Our neighbor had a laminate floor that got wet from a dish washer overflow and the entire floor needed to be replaced.

Something like ash/mahogany/etc battens that are treated with a natural finish would be a better solution than these manufactured products. If there is ever an issue that you need to replace part of the product it would also be easier to match.

I have been considering what to use when I remove the carpet on the hull in the berthing areas. I had thought to use paneling installed lengthwise, but I like the carbonized bamboo with the canvas back.

The wife would like to remove the vinyl type covering on the hulls in the V-Berth and the port side of the Master and install wood planks such as in the main salon on the port hull (in ours at least) and behind the starboard lockers. Has anyone else done this and can share some tips and hints on how to go about it? I am especially interested in how to attach the wood strips to the hull after the existing covering is removed. I am thinking this would also allow me to put up a shelf along the starboard hull in the v-berth.

i just did this on my boat ...i epoxed wall studs to the hull after scribing them to shape.....then i ripped and plained andaroba to 1 and 3/16th" by 5/16" strips and screwed them to the studs after fitting foil backed 1" foam insulation ..foil side out to the hull...here are some pics of that work....

Don't forget about the cushions! We are using 2.5 in hard density on bottom, 2.5 medium density and 1.5 in memory foam on top. I will finish with a nice sunbrella interior cloth to cover new cushions. We use marine grade foam because the holes in the foam are oval shaped and not round like most foam. Happy New Year!

Used bamboo flooring as CAGUY suggested 6-7 years ago. The material was purchased from Home Depot. This year some of the boards were replaced with the same bamboo material. There was some discoloring and water-rot where the boards had water damage. They were very easy to replace because they were not attached to the hull. With the tongue and groove boards it is easy to build up a wall or tear it down. I have been very happy with the light bamboo wood.

Nice job Paul, the contrasting colors look good. I like the way the t&g still shapes to the curve of the hull. The flooring I saw at Home Depot looks like it is laminated while the one at Costco is one piece.
