Refer Anyone

When I bought my first sailboat, it came with a switch called "REFER". I was expecting when I turned it on, maybe some Buffet tunes but no luck (or misfortune). What it does is turn on my depth and knot meter. I've always wondered if this is connected in error and supposed to turn on my DC refrigerator. Seems like an odd description for depth and speed. How do you use your refer?

It does seem like it should control the refrigerator and not the instruments. Do you have any other switches labeled instruments or navigation? I'd be a little worried if the fuse or breaker labeled for the refrigerator is rated at too high an amperage for the size of wires running to the instruments.

Where it's legal to do so. :banghead:

The refrigerator most likely would use more amps, thus requiring a larger breaker/fuse/wire.

You could probably check the gauge of the wire off your "refer" switch, then follow any wires off the refrigeration unit to their terminus, but there's no telling what an OP might have done before you got the boat. It's an enigma.

A reefer is one who reefs sails; if not a joint or a refrigerator. I don't know what a "refer" is; maybe to refer to the reefer?

A previous owner most likely used the circuit when he installed the instruments and didn't change the label.....check the fuse...

After looking at the wiring diagram, that circuit is for Instruments but labeled by the OEM as REFER. I'm not sure what was on their minds when they came up with that. Maybe "REFERence"? At least now I know it's not a new nautical term everyone but me was familiar with.
