How do you guys with the boom vangs handle putting up and down the boom when rigging? What steps do you go through? Currently, my wife and I have a system of placing the boom on the companionway, I hook up the toping lift and it supports the boom while I hook it to the mast. I really like the idea of getting rid of the topping lift. Thinking of getting a boom vang for Christmas, you know a gift to myself..... Jim S/V Java

I added a "Garhuer" solid vang to my 26 this year. Had a "Boom Kicker" on my last boat. Best investments I ever made. The topping lift is always a big pain to deal with. Do it now so you can enjoy it this season. The Garhuer is around $160, th Boom Kicker is around $150. Good luck.

Garhauer Rigging Question for Tom
Tom - How is the Garhauer vang controlled? Does the line need to be run back to the cockpit via turning blocks at the mast base and deck mounted blocks or is like the regular vangs with a built in jam or cam cleat? Thanks Ron M

Just installed Garhauer Ridgid Vang
Ron: Just installed one on our H'31. The vang comes with a block for attachment to the mast base. Beyond that you will need a deck organizer and a jam cleat, sheet stopper or something to hold the line. There is nothing on the vang to stop the line.

I was just referring you to a source for the illustrations of the different vangs which I found to be adequate enough to show their rigging as far as line control goes. RV12 shows a cam cleat in use, the others do not and would require securing the control line by other means. Garhauer indicated to me that they could set up a vang however one prefers, however... Cheers!

Thanks on where I can get one, But How do you rig this while attempting to put up and down the boom? What are the steps you go through? Anyone got closeup pictures of the attachment points?

Rigging
Assuming you are talking about the original block-and-tackle vang from Hunter, my procedure is similar to yours, except for one addition. I use the jib halyard to lift the forward end of the boom up to where I can connect it. Reverse the procedure when unstepping the mast. When unstepping, I just disconnect the vang from the base of the mast and wrap it around the boom/sail. If you go for a rigid vang, you could use both the jib halyard and the main halyard to lift and position the boom while you get things connected. Using the halyard(s) it is possible to rig the boat by yourself. Ralph C. Regar S/V Shambala

Jim, We have a Garhauer which I just installed this spring. I added a double stack of turning blocks on the starboad side for the controll line. Just returned from a reqatta at Leech lake so the details are fresh. I left the sail on and tied the vang off at approximately level. One person lifted just enough at the end of the boom to take the pressure off the gooseneck pin which I removed. Then lift the vang off the mast rail (loosen the retaining screw first) and your in business Jeff Peltier
