Reefing

I often read that Hunters are "tender" ( I don't think any more so than a similar type of boat) and that everybody reefs at 15 knts. Question, what size headsails are being used when you decide to reef?

Depends upon the year.

The newer Hunters with their very large mainsails and the CE(Center of Effort) so far above the waterline would qualify as "tender". That's the price for that big aft "stateroom". On the other hand my 1979 cutter-rig will carry all of her sail in 20 knots without a problem. But the big main makes the newer design a better light wind boat.

Tender misunderstanding

Hunters by and large are nnot realy inherently tender. Most of the boats are shoal draft and tend towards a flatter, wider underbody. These boats actualy have very good initial hull form stability, and with fresh sails will holds well into double digit wind speeds. That shallow, wide hull form with relatively large amounts of sail area does work against you at greater angles of heel, say beyond 15 degrees. At that point they tend to round up into the wind if you don't start playing with the sails. When you get to that point you simply start reefing and maintain tha same speed. What this design does is provide you with a boat that has enough sail area go go well in light air. You can always reduce sail for the heavier stuff. I find this preferable to a boat with small sails that wilk stand up to a gale with full sail but won't go at all in lighter air.
