Reefing

I'm thinking this is a stupid question but I need to know. I have a H34 and am wondering how to put the reefing lines to the sail. I believe from looking at I should put the line through the sail and tie some type of knot that won't pull through. I have 2 reefing lines and 2 grommets to put them through at the aft end of the boom. Thank you.

I'm not familiar with the 34, but you should have bails or pad eyes on the boom roughly aligned with the grommets, possibly slightly aft. Run each line up through the grommet and back down to the boom, then tie it to the appropriate eye with a bowline. When you pull on the reeling line after hooking in the tack, it will pull the new clew down to the boom and aft to give you a flat foot.

Splax... Where is the line that passes through your tack reef cringle go?

Jon,
I am not sure right now. I owe you some pictures and will try to get a good one of the reefing arrangement.

I didn't have time to get a picture, but each bitter end of the reefing lines passes through the cringle at the foot with a stop knot on the other side. In the above picture the first reef line comes down to the cringle, passing through by the 2nd reef line stop knot.

Tom, your setup is interesting. Beautifully drawn, too. What is the advantage of the extra run of line up to the cringle from under the boom where both Splax and I secure the bitter end of our reeding lines right to the little eye under the boom?

I would think there's extra friction, but maybe additional pull as well that makes up for the friction?
