reefing

I have a 1979, 27' Hunter with a sliding goose neck on the boom and two reefing lines going through the boom.When reefing I have to lift the boom into the locked positon in order to take x number of slides out of the gate to reef the sail. I'm wondering if I could keep the boom in the locked position & by installing a vang with a cunningham through the cringle when reefing give me a good reef without doing any damage to the goose neck & also it would help not having to take out the slides each time & put them back in when I want to shake out a reef. Does this sound like a good idea or does anyone have another solution. Randy

Hello Randy: On my '78 h27, I simply have a 3' pendant fastened permenantly into the tack reef cringle (passed thru and stop knot) When I reef I pull sail down to proper height(leaving slides in) and tie off to a cleat below the gooseneck. Basically same on clew, with line led to forward part of boom and cleated. Good luck red

Rams horn and leave slides in

After heaving to, we just ease the halyard until the reefing ring fits over the rams horn fitting on the boom, then haul it back up. There are a couple of flakes at the mast, but we just reef the clew with the appropriate reefing line, gather the rest of the main in the reefing ties, and take off.

aluminum cover

I know what you mean, I was also tired of removing the slides so I removed the sailstop completly and found an aluminum slat (the kind used to cover the rug when it reaches the edge of the room)in Home Depot I cut a 7"piece and covered the slot in the mast with it (I prebore holes in the mast with a die and covered the SS screws with the wite stuff that the rigger use to stop the disimilar metals rutine. Now is as easy as 1 2 3 I still have to go forward just to stick the ring in the ramhorn. Good LuckEd tamaraS/V Mastconfusion
