as much reef as you want or need from the safety of the cockpit :) Definately one of the benefits of a furling main...IMHO that is. SV/Copa Cabana

how to reef

Here is how I reef my 340. point up or at least release tension on the main sheet. Put the outhaul line around a winch, hold the tail. Open the rope clutch for the out haul. begin to crank the othewr winch that has the main furling line. When you have reduced the sail area as desired, lock the outhaul rope clutch, and continue to crank the reefing line winch until you have the proper sail tension. Fall off the wind to fill the sail then adjust the reefing line until you have the sail shape you want.

I've also found it easier to furl-in when the boom is on the port side so that the sail has a straight path to the roller and does not have to bend around the mast.
