Your helm will tell you
The newer,lighter, beamier models are prone to significant weather helm in stronger winds. I agree with the 15 knot threshold, but you can squeeze out a little more control by flattening your sail (tension the halyard and the outhaul) and reduce the angle of attack (ease the traveler). I believe the 290 has no backstay. If that is not correct, you can tension the backstay to push the sail draft forward to relieve weather helm. These steps may be the difference as to whether you can retain control without having to reef. However, keep in mind that when it comes to reefing, your first gut reaction is usually correct.There is a good article in Sail magazine this month about sail trim.Happy sailing!Gary Scheier"Serenisea"
