I have a '00 Hunter 290. At how many knots of wind should I consider reefing the Main on this boat? Thanks.

Before something happens

John: I think that most of the medium to larger Hunters seem to need a reef somewhere around the 15-18kt range. This seems to be a magic number. I think that the real key here is to keep the boat at something around 15-18 degrees of heel. Once you are over more than this you start to loose effiency. Of course ask everyone. It's more exciting to be over 20-25. The problem with sailing them over at 25 is when you get a good puff, then you are in trouble.

Around 15kts

I have been getting alot of experience reefing my H290 lately and do so if its blowing around 15kts. Anything over and you're overpowered. The boat sails nicely under a single reef!

Your helm will tell you

The newer, lighter, beamier models are prone to significant weather helm in stronger winds. I agree with the 15 knot threshold, but you can squeeze out a little more control by flattening your sail (tension the halyard and the outhaul) and reduce the angle of attack (ease the traveler). I believe the 290 has no backstay. If that is not correct, you can tension the backstay to push the sail draft forward to relieve weather helm. These steps may be the difference as to whether you can retain control without having to reef. However, keep in mind that when it comes to reefing, your first gut reaction is usually correct. There is a good article in Sail magazine this month about sail trim. Happy sailing! Gary Scheier "Serenisea"

Or, in my case.....

My wife tells me when it's time to reef (usually 15 kts or so). Never argue with a wench with a winch handle! Greg
