Reefing the jib?

I have a Huunter 235 with a roller furler (CDI I believe, name plate missing). In heavy winds the head sail is over powering the boat. I can reef the main (one reef)to reduce sail. Has anyone tried reefing with a roller furler by pulling the saoil part way in and locking off the line. The tension from the wind and the jib sheet should keep the sail working even though partially furled. I don't want to try this and end up ripping the jib or wrecking the furler. Any thoughts? New to roller furling. Hayden

Check out the CDI site.

Hayden: Check out the CDI site. For some reason I think that the CDI furlers are NOT designed to reef. I am probably wrong, but you may want to check their website or give them a call.

roller reefing jib

I also have a 1993 vitage 235 with a CDI unit on the jib. We have used it to depower the jib in the heavier winds. (about all you can do, short of rolling the jib up all the way). Doesn't seem to have hurt anything in 3 years time. We were close to 20 mph winds this weekend and had good control with a reefed main and about 1/3 ro 1/2 jib. (No heading up).

CDI

No problems reefing a CDI furler. Padded luff provides a big advantage.

Hayden, I have found that my CDI furling on our

95 H26 reefs nicely to about 65% flying. After that it begins to flog and is too hard on the sail to continue using. A MAJOR improvement is moving the jib sheet sheave blocks forward from their cabin top mounting point when reefing the jib. I move my lead blocks to the cabin top front lifeline stanchion post. I went to the hardward store and bought a pair of 2" hinged caribeners and 2 inexpensive 1 1/2" sheaves. By doing this the 16 inch forward difference keeps the reefed jib from flogging. Using the original sheaves makes the downward pull to weak to control the sail. Return to using the originals when unreefed. Ray S/V Speedy

CDI reefing

I reef my CDI furler on my Hunter 240 when needed and have had good results. I use the helm (weather or lee) and my heel to determine how much to pull it in. I have found that in high winds shorthanded the jib is easier to use than my main with less weather helm. I have tried leading my jib sheet outside the lifelines and securing to a stern cleat but that's alot of hassel. At times I must head to wind to get my CDI to start rolling in. Hope this helps........

Reef away

I have a H240 with a roller furling jib, CDI, and I reef the jib often. Never have any problems and in fact the instruction book which came with the furler mentions that the device is made to reef. I had the roller furler installed with the boat when I got it new. The dealer installed the furler. Daniel
