I am still kinda new at this stuff, I must be doing something wrong this past year when I was trying to reef my sail in 20 knot winds. Got caught out on lake michigan. I lowered the main sail, pulled the reef line no problem, but had to take off the sail stop to get the front ring over the metal thing on the front of the boom. Lost the sail stop to the lake. Is it normal to have to take the sail stop off in order to reef?

Two ideers...

It IS necessary to remove the sail slug stop to reef on my Hunter 23 (1987). I have heard (but not tried) two remedies: carry a second stop to replace the one you'll drop, or tie the stop to the mast with a piece of extra-light line (such as fishing line). H23s are great boats. Happy sailing! Richard

Reefing h 23

It depends on the spacing of your sail slugs. My old sail I had to remove the stopper, I had a new mainsail made, and the spacing allowed me to keep the stop in place. I just lower the sail to the reef point and attatched the ring to the ram's horn.

Electrical terminal

I’ve thought about adding a small “D” ring to make up the 1/4 inch needed to reef without removing the sail stop. The one thing that I did do was put an electrical terminal onto the sail stop and attach that to the mast with a small line. I’ve been able to keep the extra stop in the parts locker. my way

Guys........this ain't brain surgery. Just run a short line through the reefing cringle with brass rings on each end that fit snuggly onto the ram's horn from either side. I sure don't want to be messing with the slug stop in reefing conditions!

Mike is right

Mike has it right. Then just mark your halyard at the cockpit end to show how much you have to drop it to put one of Mike's rings on the horn. When the tack/horn ring is in place, pull down the clew line and then pull the halyard back up.
