I have removed my main sail and didn't make notes on the reefing as it was removed. I thought I would remember how to properly run the reef lines but delays in putting the sail back on and a senior moment have erased the process. My drawings only show the end of the boom and the reef line. Can any of you send photos of the reef lines at the mast end of the boom? I need the help if you can. I have designed and fabed dingy davits for my 321 that also has a motor lift that will also assist in a MOB recovery if anyone would be interested in photos. Thanks for any help with my reefing lines. Toom

Reef lines

Tom, I'm doing this from memory as Reverie is laid-up for the winter and mainsail-less herself, but here goes... Stb side is #1 reef, the following applies to stb side: My line is white w/green fleck, I think they stayed pretty std on this stuff. Line from top of gooseneck casting (mast end) goes up to lower reef ring on stb side of main. Tie as small a bowline you can so that the ring gets as close as possible to the gooseneck when reefed. Line from bottom of gooseneck goes through turning block as base of mast and to the bank of stoppers/winch. The line that exits at the rear of the boom is actually a seperate line, but is same white w/green fleck. The reefing system uses a shuttle block system inside the boom, hard to describe. This aft line should go up to the lowest reefing tack ring in the main, and through it to port. It then goes down to the boom and gets tied around the boom, after passing through the aft-most slit in the lazy cradle. Make sure you tie a small bowline again so that the sail will pull all the way down to the boom when reefed. Really, the right way to do it is to pass the line under the boom, back up on the other side, and tie the bowline around the standing part of the line. In other words, you are tying a 'slip-knot' around the boom rather than the boom being inside the bowlines bight. Port side is #2 reef, here goes.... Line is probably white w/red fleck. Line from top of gooseneck casting (mast end) goes up to upper reef ring on stb side of main. Again, tie as small a bowline you can so that the ring gets as close as possible to the gooseneck when reefed. Line from bottom of gooseneck goes through turning block as base of mast and to the bank of stoppers, and port cabintop winch if you have one. The line that exits at the rear of the boom is actually a seperate line, but is same white w/red fleck. The port reefing system also uses a shuttle block system inside the boom. This aft line should go up to the upper reefing tack ring in the main, and through it to stb. It then goes down to the boom and gets tied around the boom, after passing through the fwd-most slit in the lazy cradle. Make sure you tie a small bowline again so that the sail will pull all the way down to the boom when reefed. Again, tie to the boom as described above. FWIW, The single-line reefing system is despised by many people because of the friction it has. I found almost ALL of this friction is due to the small diameter sheaves in the shuttle blocks inside the boom. I have never used my #2 reef (I'll be in port by then...hopefully!), but I modified the #1 system and got rid of most of the friction. I did so by removing one end casting on the boom and replacing the shuttle block with two larger diameter blocks which I attached together end-to-end. Hope that helps, and if not maybe I can get a drawing to you somehow. Good luck! Tim

I goofed

Opps, I should have proofread BEFORE I hit send! For Port side mast end, it SHOULD read: Line from top of gooseneck casting (mast end) goes up to upper reef ring on PORT side of main.
