Reefing Main on 222

The reefing line is missing from an '84 222 I recently purchased. I see the pulley and cleat on the starboard side of the boom, but I'm not sure how to feed the line through the sail and into the pulley and cleats. Any advice? Thanks, -- Steve

On the aft end of your boom on the opposite side where the block is should be a small bracket maybe an 1 1/2" long 1/2" wide 1/2"loopin it. Anyway, the line should run from this bracket,up the leech[back side of sail]to where the grommet is[at reefing height] thru the grommet, down thru the turning block[on oppositeside of boom that the bracket is on]and up to the cleat[leave the line with a little slack in it so as not to affect the sail shape, and make it long enuff to tie off].In other words do your measurements with the mainsail up.hope this helps.

Steve I hope this helps - I have an O'Day 23 and I have a scanned image of the manual which shows the rigging. It is not very comprehensive but I think this image will help. I cannot send it because the size is too big for this site. From your description it sounds as though it is the same for your boat. Send me your e-mail and I will send you the picture (jforster@ti.com)You will need a line up to the cringle (grommet) on the leech of the sail and also a line at the mast to act as a down haul. On my boat the line is tied off on the boom and is rigged through the cringle on the leech all the time. The extra line hangs loosely when the main is up and is tied up on one of the cleats - ready to be used.I have copied a couple of extra pictures onto the sketch. I got these some time ago from a web site. These images show a full and reefed main and you can see how the major "lines" are rigged. Also shown are ideas about a good and poor reef showing the importantance of tightening the downhauls.Based on my own experience I recommend sitting at your dock or on your mooring and rigging this on a nice quiet day so that you can see where the lines go and get some confidence in rigging this - then try sailing and see how it all works - you do not want to be trying to rememeber these drawings and trying to find the appropriate peices of line when you are on the water and it is blowing.Hope this help - Have fun.
