Bill and Tim, I hope this file comes through showing the reefing system. Thanks, Ron

I posted an additional solution on the other thread.

OK I see it now. had an ISOMAT at one time. Not a fan of the traveling car as it is a pain to replace the lines but it worked fine.

I looked at your diagram, and it is very clear and easy to understand. While I wonder about how effecively you can pull the tack down and forward, I suspect that those eyes on the mast do a good job, especially in light of the single tack line.

My system is classic jiffy reef -- pull the tack down, hook it, pull on the clew. You have to go foward and all that. But it is S-I-M-P-L-E. I like it, but I keep looking at these single line systems, because they are easy to do.

So, my question. The diagram shows one reef. In real life, there are TWO reefs, plus a clew outhaul. How messy does all that get? Is it something that can be retrofitted? Or does it really require a boom designed for it (getting 4 or 5 sheaves integrated into the gooseneck isn't an easy after-market change!).

Thanks!

Harry

The full up boom would require three sheaves on the boom end (reef 1, reef 2, outhaul) and 3 at the gooseneck (reef 1, reef 2 outhaul). the cunningham can be rigged directly to the mast base. Presumably the outhaul would already have a boom end block so you could just place 2 cheek blocks there to handle the reef lines. The gooseneck could also get 2 external cheek blocks for the reefs. That just leaves the outhaul gooseneck to mast turning block to figure out. Kinda depends on how the OEM handled the outhaul at the boom end.
How is your outhaul handled at the boom end? Internal or external line?

Bill,

It seems I was incorrect when I stated I understood the diagram. My take is that a line goes from the reef tack, down to a block, up to a sheave on the boom (#1), back to the travelling block, forward to a sheave on the boom (#2), down to the deck, and then aft. That's 2 sheaves per reef, with 2 reefs is 4.

My boat currently has an internal clew outhaul, running through an exit plate to a cleat, so it doesn't exit at the goosneck. If it did, that would make the 5 sheaves. Also, my current reef clews go to cheeks and then outside the boom to a cleat -- something I very much want to change (even if it's just a pair of exit plates to get the lines inside the boom), as the lines hanging down are messy.

Thanks, Bill, Tim and Harry for the input. As I said earlier, I completely rebuilt my boom two years ago with all new blocks/sheaves internally and at the terminal ends. The outhaul, as everything, is internal. I believe it is a restriction problem caused either by the line diameter--3/8", restriction of the reef lines at the gooseneck or perhaps the weight of the boom without easing(taking up) the topping lift. All runs are fair and clean. I will look at it this weekend and hopefully will have some good news. Thanks, Ron

Thats exactly the system i have on my Pearson 31 with an Isomat boom. For me it works very well and can all be done from the cockpit, i am happy with the system. It does take longer to shake out the reef than putting it in because of the friction.

The diagram is very clear and worked very well on my Hunter Legend 35. I had the boat for 10 years and never had a problem with the reefing system as designed. I had both reefs installed and all the lines led aft.
