I really have difficulty in maintaining sail shape when reefing the main. I relax the lazy jacks, tighten the vang, etc., but usually do not maintain good sail shape when reefed. Happens on first reef as well as second. Any suggestions? thanks

Reefing questions

First do you have a jiffy sys.? as you go fwd to the mast, do you use the reef hook ? or is it just reef line holding the main, the reef hook pulls the sail fwd, and in line with the remainding unreefed sail, if you use a jiffy sys, does the aft line beside holding the sail down it should act as an out haul, flattening the foot, also tiedowns between the two should help flattening the foot, then adjust the vang. I hope it helps.

Jiffy

Yes, it has the "Jiffy" system. The reefing line does act as an outhaul when reefing. And it works, I just don't seem to get flat sail shape. I'll work more with the vang and see what I can do. Thanks

it might be the sail

It's possible that you're doing everything you're supposed to do, but that the sail is not cooperating because of one of two reasons. (1) It was cut too full to reef well. (2) It has stretched due to age or hard use. If it's a new sail, get your sailmaker onboard and ask them to look at it. If your sailmaker won't do this, find a different one for all future work. If it's an ancient sail, the inability to get good shape while reefed is a good sign that it's time to go shopping.
