Reefing 23.5

After reading some of the threads here and checking the manual, I'm still a little confused about the part regarding the ramshead hooks at the goosneck. According to the manual I'm supposed to hook the reefing cringle on the ramshead hook but my reefing cringle has a strap running through it with a ring on either end. My first thought was that one ring went over each hook but the strap wasn't really long enough and it was tough getting them both over a hook. Hope this all makes sense.

Mine doesn't have the strap and rings, and the cringle just hooks over one side of the ram's head. Can you do that?

How about just hooking one of the rings instead? Then again, if they have no function then perhaps I should just cut off the rings?

I'm guessing that the reef point on the leach needs to line up horizontally with the new tack point at the mast. Maybe if you compare how the reef looks using the cringle directly and the strap and rings. One might seem to be too high or too low.

You're only supposed to use one ring.... for which ever side the rams head is on...
The strap allows you to reef without pulling the sail out of the track, because the forward reef cringle by itself won't work well with a rams head. Without a rams head, you are better off rigging a reef line for the luff up one side or the mast, through the cringle, and back down to a cleat on the other side. That gives you some purchase also.
