Whew! I cannot get this reef gear arranged worth %$#!. I find that I am in need of part 1492 for my Z-Spar mast (1987 H23). This is the rams head that that passes through the gooseneck and kinda looks like an upside-down "u" with eyes on the ends for hooking the sail. I can get the part. It cost $32.00 plus $14.00 shipping and handling from RI to Mystic CT (about 35 miles!). OR...I can pick it up but ONLY if I order and pay for it before I drive there. In either scenario, if I return it for any reason, I suffer a 25% restocking charge. Here's the real query: Can't I just arrange some strong 1/8" line at the gooseneck and tie off the sail? Seems like a lot less worry then plan A! Does anyone have a through-the-gooseneck upside-down "u" shaped ram's head with eyes on the ends for hooking the sail that they are not using? Thanks, Richard H23 "Invictus"

Makeshift Rams head

My 87 h23 came with a 3/4" line passed thru the goose neck already.(previous owner must have run into the same problem you did) I just pull my main down, tie a figure eight stop knot in the line & retension the halyard. Works OK for me.

Reef early and reef often

That being said, why mess with a rams head at all? Create a single-line reefing system and lead the line back to the cockpit. You can buy a kit or make your own. I think you'll be happier with that, especially if you single-hand your boat.

Reefing, Mike B.

I was thinking about making some different reefing points for my 240. The factory tie offs take off almost 5' of sail. I would like to be able to take off less to start with. Anybody have any ideas? Mike B., we just got back from 3 days on Granby, it was great! Nice big lake. ross

Good deal! I'm hoping to get to Granby early next month as I almost have my autotiller wired up (it only took 3 months). Gotta watch out for renegade bulldozers though.

If the 240 is anything like it's 26' siblings, the sails reefing points are actually 2nd reef points. Standard first reef points would take away less sail. I'm considering adding 1st reef points to my sail. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Tying off should be OK, but...

The rams horn does two things that tying off can't do: 1) secures the tack VERY quickly. Just slip the cringle over the hook and it's done. 2) pulls the tack down low on the boom However, tying off isn't a major problem as long as you reef early. Peter H23 "Raven"

Tie off at gooseneck...

Peter, Understood. If I tie it off at the gooseneck, I will get the sail down to the boom, no? Also, I am semi-permanently attaching a line from the cringle through the gooseneck. All I have to do is cinch and tie in a jiffy. Quick. Richard

Untying

Isn't it going to be difficult to untie the line when you want to shake the reef out? It will have been loaded pretty heavily. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

tight knot

What I meant was that the knot will have cinched up tightly, due to high loads, making it difficult to untie, even after the load is removed. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy
