Reef Point Installation

I have a 1973 DSII and the mainsail does not have any reef points. I want to add some reef points. Is there a rule of thumb for the location of the points? Thank you.

Reef Heights

Generally if we are installing one reef we put it at 14% up the luff. For multiple reefs the first reefs is at 12.5%, 2nd reef at 25%, 3rd reef at 37.5%. Another option we offer for more tender boats are a set of Deep Reefs at 15%,30%,45%. Of course sometimes when installing reefs on an existing sail you will have to vary these heights a bit in order to avoid lifting batten pockets etc.Thanks,Bill ColomboDoyle Sailmakers
