I have an 84 H34.I replaced prop shaft. So prop and shaft were removed. When I re-installed the new shaft. My reverse is now forward and forward is reverse.nothing was removed from reduction gear other than the bolts at the coupling. No linkage, cables ,nothing.I have a Martek feathering prop that was taken apart to install on new shaft.could this be my problem.it all went together very easy.I would welcome some ideas......

If no one touched the shift selector or cable, then it must be the prop.. If it has a "Right Hand" or "Left Hand" way to assemble, then someone has the assembly wrong. The standard prop is "Right Hand" (turning clockwise for forward when looking from the stern), so the Martek should be assembled in that config.. Interesting..

Ahhh the classic "If...... Then"
this directly from the Martek feathering prop assembly guide :
14.
Align the appropriate “R” or “L” mark on the body to the alignment mark on the forward end of the main gear. The “R” alignment is for a Right Hand rotation propeller (clockwise when viewed from the stern looking ahead). The “L” alignment is for a Left Hand rotation propeller.

Ahhhhh, now I see.I need to haul that thing out.Take it apart and re-install prop correctly. i did all this myself.no wonder it seemed too easy. That also explains why I could not go as fast as before while motoring. Not to mention, I have been doing it all in reverse. My owners manual is on the boat and I am not there. But I will be going down Friday, and I will look at that rt.hand,lt.hand install.I really hope that solves my problem, because I did not touch anything else but coupling and shaft.thanks for the help

Ahhhh...

Maybe I'm missin' somethin' but, if a left-hand blade is reinstalled 180 degrees from the way it was, wouldn't it still be a left-hand blade? If you put a left-handed prop on backwards, wouldn't it still be left-handed?

I suspect that Chris may need right-handed blades to correct his problem.

Not positive, Dan, but I think that "L" or "R" setting on the prop hub determines which way the blade flips when power is applied.. The right handed blades will work the wrong way but not as efficiently as the right way.

The Martec has always been on the boat...All I did was replace prop shaft with a new one.The prop worked fantastic until I removed it and re-installed it.After I installed it, I gave it an extra shot of grease in the fitting.Everthing moved and rotated just right. Then I. put the boat back into the water Should I get down to the boat and double check my manual ? I really did not realize that it could be installed incorrectly. All I know is that it is frustrating.I can easily fix the problem as soon as I am certain I know what it is.....

Thanks, Claude...

I'm not familiar with the Martec's rotating prop blades. I'm more familiar with the folding ones like we have on the boat I race on.

Sounds like another reason to apply the KISS principal!
