I have a 78 27 and it has a marine head with direct discharge. Is it a huge job to refit with a holding tank? Thanks Jeff.

Shouldn't be too difficult...

Give me call and we'll sort out where to put it and how best to do it. 800-352-5630

easy enough

I installed a 20 gal holding tank under the V-berth on our 80 C27. I purchased a form fitting tank from Catalina Direct, installation requires cutting into fibreglass and then reglassing, but a not to diffacult a job. I ran a top quality hose from the head into the top stbd side of the tank and another from the outlet through the bulkhead and into the hanging locker. Here I installed a Y-valve, one side goes straight up to the on deck pumpout fitting and the other goes under the port settee to a hand pump and a through hull. For the tank vent I opted for a 3/4" ID hose to a vent fitting located in the hanging locker (through the hull). The whole job requires a bit of work but it does function satisfactorly. Note: installing a 6" round removable deck plate in the fibreglass over the tank outlet affords access when needed.

Another option

Jeff, I changed the head in my 1979 Hunter 27' and completely eliminated the marine head and holding tank and put in an 5.2 gallon Sanipottie. The hole thing is compact and takes up less space in your boat. The marine head works great and have never had a problem with it leaking during rough seas and heavy sailing. It will cost you $114.00 out of the West Marine Catalogue and is on page 231 in the 1999 catalogue. Brian

backward?

Brian, I don't know, but would guess that most folks would think that replacing a marine head with a porta potti is a step backwards. I for one went the other direction. Regards.

Porta-Pottie back to head

Jeff, Oddly enough, I am doing the same thing with my 27!!!!! I made a dummy model out of cardboard of a holding tank that I thought would fit in the space available for it and kept changing the size until I believe the actual tank will fit. I am down to a l5 gallon holding tank and am planning to fit it under the right side bunk; that is where the fresh water inlet is to supply water to the head and also the discharge. The tank fits between those two valves. Then I plan to use a pump between a Y valve and the discharge--the Y valve will allow the suction removal of the tank contents at the dock. So, a l5 gallon tank, a Y valve, a pump, an on-deck fitting and several feet of l l/2 inch hose and double clamps on the hoses. Those are my plans at the moment--subject to change, of course. Joe My 27 is a 1980--your inlet and discharge valves may not be in the same place??
