Just reporting what Sailing mag printed.
After I had read the article I had some hope it would be more accurate. From the reviews doesn't sound like it.
I understand.
Charlie Doane tells it like it is. By the way, in addition to his own blog and books, he is the executive editor of Sail Magazine.

The sailboat Viagra ad wasn't very technically accurate either............but it got its message across, got people to talk and probably sold some product.

It is quite likely the director did not intend this movie to be an sailing instructional guide..... but rather something more personal.... human, if you will.

The world is full of nit pickers who look at the minutiae with no consideration given to the overall message. It would be like criticizing a post on this forum because the poster misspelled a few words.

That said, I am one of those nitpickers. Even though I try to appreciate a movie for it's intended message or point of view, I would be distracted when I saw obvious errors that might go undetected by the majority viewer..... So .... we nitpick the technical points.... but.... once they are acknowledged, we look past them to the story.... and if the story makes sense and has no technical flaws... then we can try to appreciate the film for what it is....regardless of whether the protagonist uses a crescent wrench or a leatherman.

It's Hollywood. Don't expect that it will anything close to reality. Even though, from the Sailing article

Writer and director J.C. Chandor said sailors, especially, should like the movie. He should know: he is one

grew up sailing at Sakonnet Yacht Club in Little Compton, Rhode Island, where he later worked as a sailing instructor, and traveled with his family to Lightning regattas

Hollywood likes to embelish the facts to sound more credible to the general audience that really don't understand.

Kinda like Argo, supposed to be based on Historical facts, but left out the real story, but thats a whole different discussion.....

Wife and I thought it was an awful movie and far from the performance of his career hype that was part of the promotion.
Character development was weak such that you never did know enough to have any connection to him. And then the ending well it was underwhelming.

Hey come on its HOLLYWOOD!!! it's ART!! Man's epic battle vs himself. & nature.

That's why this country holds our HOLLYWOOD stars with such high regard. They really don't know anything useful or practical. But they really look important doing what ever they think they're doing......

Happy Thanksgiving. Bob.

Hey come on its HOLLYWOOD!!!
Exactly. Or do we really think that Bruce Willis can be shot 15 times and still get off a tag line? Or that Nicolas Cage can survive a crash landing on the strip in Las Vegas? Yellow Brick road? Not since psychedelics.
If Hollywood had to be technically accurate they would be out of business.
