Several sailing friends went to see it last week -- not much enthusiasm. I will wait for it on cable, also.
They said the boat appeared to be a Cal 39, but were not certain.

Well, part of the visit is to check out Baltimore`s premier art-deco era movie theater that has just reopened after an extensive and controversial makeover. I`ve heard many so-so opinions of the movie and had planned to wait for pay -per view but when I saw it booked at this location, we decided to go. This is mostly a social get together with a movie the Admiral and I want to see.
I am already under "NO SINGLEHANDING" lockdown so I don`t have much to lose.!

When I saw Redford attempt to tighten a VHF cable (round fitting) to the antenna using an adjustable hex head wrench and, getting rid of the collapsed mast completely by simply cutting the haulyard, I left.

I think it was more of a survival moving then sailing. We enjoyed it and it just reinforced my feelings of never sailing in salt. Haa haa I will stay in Lake Erie and the great ones. I will take a 6' chop every 10 seconds over 30' waves anyday !!!!!

While I generally liked this Redford movie, it raised a number of questions in my mind about who the technical sailing advisers were. "SOS" rather than "Mayday?" If I had been holed in the middle of nowhere, I would have been terrified. Yet Redford never seems to show the fear one would have in such a situation. That said, it is a movie worth seeing, but not before your next blue water cruise....

I have been debating on seeing the movie. I have read many reviews from sailors and most comment on the lack of accurate details. This lady over on Cruisers forum was suggesting people watch it with this in mind which I will do:

Is it just me or did he seem to react really slowly to every challenge he faced. He goes up to change the jib or do something well after it was already blowing stink.

I watched it with the wife. BIG MISTAKE!

If your significant other doesn't know much about sailing, don't take them. They will freak out when they see all the crap that goes on.

After the movie I heard some guy talking to a group of other people. He was one of those people who probably sailed years and years ago, but hasn't sailed in a long time. He was critiquing some of the actions in the movie and the critiques I overheard were a little off.

I won't say much more to avoid being a spoiler, but I will just shake my head at the movie. He really could have used some help out of the sailing public....but then again this must have been done to be a worst case scenario for an unprepared and inexperienced person.

I didn't see a life jacket the whole movie. I agree no one with any experience would react like he did in this movie but it was still moving. The wife liked it and didn't seem to be alarmed by it. From a sailing standpoint it had lots of flaws. I think it was meant to show the desperation of a survival story.

In what? Certainly not offshore sailing based on the laughable inaccuracies in the movie. Hell of a legacy for a great actor like Redford.

After I had read the article I had some hope it would be more accurate. From the reviews doesn't sound like it.
