Redford Movie "All Is Lost"

Ok, fair enough! LoL
Like I said, no suspension of disbelief.
It's why my wife and I stopped watching the Walking Dead.
We got sick of asking each other why none of these people seem to learn or evolve. LoL

Just saw this last night. I really enjoyed it, but I have a long list of things I would have done different if I were in the same situations.
I think where the real truth of it lies, is that his circumstance progresses through a series of unfortunate events, not just one, and those situations are the ones that are hardest to predict and prepare for.
Without real spoilers, I think I can say this movie is not really about sailing.
Now, my .02 on the main issues:
Hole - Plywood from interior cabinet work(bunk,chart table, etc), 5200 fast set, installed and bolstered from the inside, done. Worry about fiberglass when you get to port.
Pump - If you've got good batteries, you've got to get an electric bilge pump setup and working, even if you have to run it from the cockpit with hose. This is why I like the idea of a portable high output electric pump so much.

It is a great movie. There is a group of sailors on the Schooner Nina who may be living the "All is Lost" saga for real. They will have a lot to say to Robert Redford about how it really works when they are rescued. The families again launched planes to search a suspected target today, at a cost of about $15K per day. Being adrift is no fun. Great for Robert Redford and his salvation, now if we can gain the same for the real life All Is Lost.

The distribution of this film in the Atlanta area was limited to one theater and a for just few weeks, so now that it is available on, "On Demand" we had a chance to see it last night.
Come on, it was riddled with flaws when it comes to what to do first and how to do it. Until he got onto the life raft I was squirming in my seat screaming at this guy on what a total putz he was! It was littered with what not to do in an emergency? My favorite? "This is an SOS...really?
The only stroke of genius was the capture of condensation from the jerry can. Thats all I give him on this one. Alone half way around the world, moving in slow motion, no safety line to start, stalling on attaching the storm jib facing a huge storm (knowing his engine is shot), no flare gun, emergency ration kit, etc. on the ready? Should be a, "what not to do in an emergency" learning DVD.
I was not a fan..................Redford needs to stick with horses and downhill skiing.

I agree Bob, watch last night and was waiting for the movie to start! Never started! I thought it was blah! I enjoyed the boat but they should of had a real sailor involved in consulting on the simple things.
Reading the credits I was anxious to see what the vessel was they used in the filming. Three 1979 vintage CAL 39's were used in the movie. One give away was the two-toned painted deck, which was popular at that time. Sadly one was sunk! For sailors this was a dissappointment as to his survival techniques on the boat (not liferaft). I wanted so much to gain something from this movie and all I really got was how to collect condensation from a jerry can

Least I forget that Bob failed to raise and secure his storm dodger before the approaching storm so he might at least reduce the amount of rainwater and spray from entering the cabin that had no 12 volt bildge pumping capability because his bank of batteries were flooded with seawater.

Given the rest of the film, he probably thought the water would run out the hole in the hull
I watched this film twice. My wife and I both agree he drowns in the end and his soul is taken up by an angel. My friend says we are wrong...he was indeed rescued. Anybody want to chime in on who's correct? Also, I was very impressed with his not cursing durring the whole thing, I would have been cursing like a "sailor"!
Negative on the angel theory. If was an outstretched hand of a rescuer from the dinghy. He came up after he observed the dinghy by his torched raft! Redford lost much in this movie and I doubt him being saved by an angel was part of the script. Nice to want that ending, but I do not agree.
We all know as sailors that things might have been handled differently. He could have survived the storm, he could have expeditied repairs of the hole sooner and with better results. He appeared almost clumsy and in slow motion getting about things. He coulld have managed to save his batteries and get his engine going and he could have stopped more water from entering the cabin that ended in its sinking. Was'nt your first knee jerk reaction when he got holed was too stuff anything in that hole (bedding, pillows, cushions, etc) to stop the water from entering? Rather, he just stared at the damn thing!!!!! He was ill prepared to abandon ship, yet you never gave up hope for this guy. In the end, he was saved as he burned his raft as a last resort. He could have survived much longer given he had fresh water, was able to identify his position, had the capability to fish and still had a floating useful life raft. Running out of flares does not mean you torch your boat!
I got more out of Robin Graham's Dove or Mutiny on the Bounty then I did Redfords movie. I give it two thumbs down!!!!!!!!!!:cussing:

Just watched this on pay per view. I've only done five offshore passages (900+ miles as crew on other peoples boats) to go along with a dozen coastal passages so still consider myself a novice in that arena. That said, I've experianced two gales and some other snotty weather. Based on my own experiance this movie was unrealistic as far as his time on his boat was concerned. I've never had to abandon ship so I cant speak to that part of the movie but what he did while aboard his ship seemed dumb to say the least. There's too many examples to even write about. This is an exciting movie maybe for my next door neighbor who's a great guy but has never been on a sailboat. But to anyone who has actually gone out into the ocean in nasty weather it's silly.

I'm not a blue water sailor but I have been out on a 45 knot blow on Lake Huron a few times and I will tell you this guy did things I wouldn't even think of doing. Eating a can of food with a hole in the boat? Putting up a storm jib in the middle of a blow when he had a roller furling to put out a "diaper" for some power. NO electric bilge pump, I mean really! A life raft without water? A life raft not on the deck? And on and on. But it was a movie and had little to do with sail boat operation. It was "Cast Away" without the coconuts or a good instinct for survival.
