My future plans are to sleep onboard 2-3 nites. As I learn to sail better and my distance from home increases. This hunter 1985 23ft has this tiny little slide out from under the cockpit galley. I'd like to make it better/bigger with a larger sink, 2 burner alchol(propane?) stove maybe. I was wondering if anyone has attempted this? Or any ideas worth considering? One idea I have it to build a slide out "pantry" on the starboard side as a compliment to the "improved" galley. k Also, water storage tank with pump up front under v berth? Food, pots and pans, untensils, and dish storage? Boom box or carlike marine radio and speakers? Oh.. it's only likely me and one other person for any kind of trips when i'm ready. thanks in advance! Galley changes
Hi Denise, We have made a couple of small changes to our galley. We added a flip up counter to extend the existing one. We have a grill with a griddle or pan to put over it so we have not seen the need to add a double stove yet. I looked at changing the sink and could not find one that fit. For storage we bought some pullout drawers that go in a container, kind of like rubbermaid, and we keep this under the galley and our fold down counter top holds it in place while underway and when the counter top is up we can just pullout the drawers and have access to our cooking utensils. We keep the bigger stuff under the seats. We have an upgraded water pump but I hope to put a foot valve pump in this winter and I think I'll put the tank on the other side(starboard). The longest we have stayed on it was 10 days with one stop at a marina to spend the night onshore and get a real shower, reprovision etc. Let us know how the upgrades work. Rob Morton S/V Euphoria

Hi Denise I'm very familiar with your cruising grounds as My family launch our small run-about motorboat out of the Curtain Marina in Burlington NJ, right accross from Bristol. Anyway, We also mounted a fold up table on the bow side of the galley to add space. We also added a foot pump which makes pumping water so much easier, especially if you want a bucket or pot of water, your arms don't get tired. In addition, I moved the water tank from the port lazzerette to inside under the starboard aft bunk. this helped to correct the list to port and allows easier access. I changed from the rigid tank to a 5 gallon camping bladder type tank that can be bought for about $10.00 in any camping store. choice of fuel?
I can't help but wonder about choice of fuels. Surely using propane in a boat is no worse then using it in a camper. The "rotten egg" smell is a real indicator if it's leaking for sure. I have a 2 burner propane stove I could adapt to the new set up. The orginal alchol stove looks like it's never been used. Can it even make coffee? (guess I should try it out huh?) I've found sinks on RV camper suppliers online. Im sure there are very small sinks in the home centers too. All the storage under the cushions seems to be a wealth of space that's useable too. If the seat/berth tops were hinged instead of using the little trap door for access it would be way more accessable too! water proof bags or containers would do for extra protection also. But, where to put the spice rack? ;D a larger water tank or 2 linked together on each side of the V berth seems a likely place. I'll use a 12 pump like I had in my old trailer for water, it never seemed to drain the battery very much. clothing storage may be a problem however. thanks for the indeas! Denise

Ditch the alcohol stove
just a couple of points about propane. Comparing a boat to a camper is not necessarily valid. A camper will not trap propane inside like a boat will. The propane is heavier than air and will settle in the bilge. There is nothing comparable to the hull or bilge in a camper. It is still a hazard in a camper however - just different and probably less so than a boat. The other consideration about fuels on a boat is that it is much more likely to have wet and or corrosive conditions which will quickly rust out a fuel tank or propane container. I have seen gasoline tanks which corroded around the base and leaked fuel. Do not leave propane containers inside the boat or metal gas tanks outside for just that reason. As to the other modifications, my wife made some canvas pockets which would hang in various places for storage as well as transporting the contents more conveniently back home and bringing them back full. It was a convenient way to remember what we needed.

Our Alcolol stove works fine. We can make coffee, boil water and make eggs. The only problem we've seen has been a really large pot with a semi-frozen cassaroll. We use a 2nd small propane countertop stove that I place in the cockpit with bracing material. I also don't like propane in the boat itself without all the marine safety equipment like auto shutoff and SS fittings. H23 Under Cushion Storage
Hi Denise - you could put vertical doors with hinges at the bottom and top latches to access the salon storage compartments through the sides of the bench-work without moving the cushions at all. Other configurations (perhaps normal vertical hinges or even sliding panels) would work to. Somebody did this and detailed it the archives or photo forum, but I'm too lazy to go look for it. Mike

got the DNA at the depot. yes much cheaper!. Question? this stove doesn't look like it's ever been used.. there is this..rubber like fabric between the canister and the slide shutter? Remove it? I think it's a gasket to keep the Alk from evaporating? I found bladder tanks in all kinds of shapes at Defender industries. (boat supplier) I like the triangle one ..it will fit nicely under the vee berth. I will use an electric pump eventually. thanks EVERYONE! Denise

Denise, You are right, The rubber disc is there only to prevent the alcohol from evaporating. My stove was never used either but we can now fill it and the alcohol remains (does not evaporate) for about 1 month. It's not too bad and the alcohol is cheap. Also, you do not have to fill it all the way so you could fill it for every trip. /Chuck S/V Windsongs 85' H23

nice to see your enthusiasm. You'll love th h23 I've had mine almost 3 years and we use it for long weekend trips. I love the alchohol stove, we do quite a bit of cooking on it and it works great. A lot hotter flame than you would think and quiet. Be careful with the electric water pump. a little handier but you will go through a lot more water.
