Am I the only sailor here jonesing for June 1st to get here already so Red Snapper season can open?

They are already in thick in the Panama City area. It looks to be a bountiful year in Florida. Well except maybe not for Texas and Louisiana as the feds are punishing them with a super short Red Snapper season in federal waters because the states did not line up the size requirements with the federal requirements. We are getting a 40 day season and I read Texas and Louisiana are only getting a week to 10 days in federal waters.

In California, rock fish opened last weekend. My son and I are going out Sunday morning.

Still two weeks away from the season opening in Florida, but boy are they here and in close to shore. We went fishing yesterday 5 miles from shore and they were aggressive. Cannot wait to spend June stocking the freezer. Yesterday was catch and release for the Red Snappers. My wife was saying it was a great day in the variety of fish we caught. King Mackeral (trolling), Red Snapper, Grouper, Atlantic Grunt, Trigger, Shark, Black Sea Bass.

Making a run

Making an offshore run next week from New Orleans to Pensacola. Will be trolling when offshore. Would much rather eat snapper, but absolutely love catching big Kings.

One of the Kings we brought on board showed me how wonderful one of their defense mechinisms works. He had been gorging himself with small shrimp. Once I had him in the cockpit he started emptying everything in his stomach and threshing his head about. I had pink little maggot sized shrimp flung everywhere, including may face and hair. I could not get the hook out of him fast enough and back over the side.

During the catch and release season is it ok to keep and cook the fillets and release the bones and head. A fish the size in the photo wwould provide an immediate meal for me.

Not sure the wildlife and fisheries would think that is catch and release. Especially the release in the hot grease. Just my thoughts.

Something to think about

Catch and release into the hot grease. There is absolutely nothing better than fish that haven't really quit flopping before throwing them on a grill. We are being punished here in La. because the state has chosen to not follow the federal guidelines.
