I thought you guys might like a little DIY photo. Last year I was bird hunting in Northern NH and while driving down a dirt road saw the "craft" in the picture below. I actually had to stop, back up, and take a picture. I was laughing so hard it came out a little fuzzy. A few 55 gallon drums, some galvanized pipe, indoor outdoor carpet, plastic lattice work, some deer antlers, a $10.00 barbeque grill & a dinner bell. My buddy and I still laugh about this craft every time we hear that country song Red Neck Yacht Club. Let's not forget about the above ground pool boarding ladder so he can cook "on the hard"....

Hey guys WHY THE...

HECK! do you all gotta bust on my party barge? What, you all don't like dear meat? As long as them dear are in the water it's fishin' time! This 'boat' is perfect, or should I say, almost perfect. Without the Camo paint job it just doesn't look right. Get this, and I am being totaly serious. I'm sorry I didn't have a camera for this one. Yea it's standard equipment, but not this day. Last summer I was burning up fuel in my 20' cuddy on the Shenandoah river (yea all 3.5 miles of deep water, LOL) and I see these two dudes fishing off of some kind of 'boat'? So after a couple passes, and being the people person I am,(plus this boat doesn't look right, it's something out of Tom Sawyer). I putt putt up near them and give a wave, and asked if I can come over. So I putter up to these two dudes sitting in lawn chairs on a "pontoon deck boat" made out of layers and layers (at least a couple feet) of that blue styrofoam type insulation you use on houses, and a "groove" cut out in the middle for the whole "pontoon" experience and a deck made of 2 sheets of plywood. For the propulsion system they had a car battery, a trolling motor, and one paddle. The crazy part about it was that they were perfectly content with their beer, fishing the river, and happy as hell they 'built' their boat. So after exchanging a couple beers and discussing their revolutionary idea on boat engineering, and I had to ask the question that was burning my brian. So, where did you all come up with this idea for your boat? Their answer, "I seen it on the internet!"

I have spent a lot of time in the traditional wood

boat world, with some folks who were snooty about glass boats, never mind motor boats. I say the best bost is the one that has the biggest smiles aboard, and the worst boat is the one with the biggest frowns. The boats in the first pics look like big time smilers to me! I don't quite know what to say about the last one, except it could be a hell of a party boat.

Named Charlie -

supposedly for the former harbormaster who would not allow it in the marina. By the way - the Port Washington Marina staff is one of the MOST pleasant and helpful we have met anywhere.

Higgs, Have you ever seen it sailing?

This steel vessel is located on Lake Michigan. It looks like it was made by a welder who knew nothing about building boats. ;)

Red Neck boats

These guys or gals are great. They didn't have to pay anywhere near the amount of money we forked out to get the same enjoyment.

They probably have more fun...

Do you really think the guy spends $180.00 on bottom paint for those 55 gallon drums!! That's at least a weekends worth of PBR Tall Boys for three...

That's how we used to scald hogs

after we killed them and before we butchered them. *yks

I have never seen this boat out of the slip. I originally sailed out of WI on L Michigan for many years and have visited this port often always seeing the boat in its slip. Offhand, I would say it has been there pushing ten years. This photo is from last summer when I moved my Nassau 34 from Racine, WI to Olcott.

I think that it is time to open enrollment in

the ATF yacht club. There is no initiation fee and you just have to sail what you brung. ATF = anything that floats. ;)

Port Townsend, Wa. Has a kenetic sculpture

race. The entries have to do about 1 km in the water, 3 or 4 km on pavement, and go through the "dismal bog" which is a serious mud hole. Really worth seeing if you're in the neighborhood. Everything from a guy on a bike with a block of styrofoam to four person amphibious mechanical wonders that take years to build.

Thanks for the laughs

Home after a long two days on the road... and I'm still grinning from the photos and comments. Here's my question about the original post and photo: See the fenders? What in the world are the fenders protecting? Are they protecting the boat -- or what the boat runs into?

Personally....

I think you all are disgusting. Making fun of people who are just trying to get the most enjoyment out of what they have.

Loosers

How would you like if people were posting pictures of your boat saying it's not worth fenders? I don't think you would like it that much.
