Red flags? I'm buying a sailboat (cataiina 36). No detailed history, but the mast has been replaced as well as a bent shaft. i'm asking myself what would cause either of these to be replaced. Anyone out there have any ideas? Should I be concerned?

Most likely

The mast probably resulted from improper maintenance. Either improper, or lack of, rig tuning, or rig inspection. The shaft probably resulted in an encounter with a line, either the owner's of someone else's.

Dismasting

I can't imagine any scenario that would require a new mast other than a dismasting. The rigging could have failed, they could have hit a bridge, lightning strike - who knows. Probably would be a good idea to ask, just in case whatever the problem is wasn't taken care of. On the plus side, it has a new mast & most probably new rigging. These are pretty spendy upgrades. Assuming that there was no peripheral damage from whatever caused the mast to be replaced, a new mast & rigging is a good thing. I wouldn't worry too much about the shaft unless it hasn't been fixed - that wasn't clear in your message. LaDonna

Red Flags

Robert, under the two items you specified I would highly recommend that you have the boat surveyed by a respected surveyor of your choice. You find and higher the surveyor, not the seller. Let him inspect the entire boat, mast, rigging engine, hull, etc. I believe that it should cost you under $500 for the survey and you will know what is up with the boat. It could be the best allocation of your money if the surveyor comes up with problems. Good Luck, Mickey

New mast

A new mast could be the result of many things; I guess LaDonna just doesn't have a very active imaginations! ;) My C36 rig is new due to the mast being damaged while the boat was in storage. This happend before I bought it, and i got a great deal, plus, I have a new rig, mast, boom, standing rigging, running rigging, etc. I heard of a crane falling over here on the North Shore and wiping out an entire rack of masts and booms in storage - a windfall for Marein Exchange in Peabody, who got hte job to make new rigs for most of them.

Windfall?

John I don't know if it was a windfall for Marine Exchange, they went out of business this year! Nautical Traders in Salem bought most of their gear.
