What are the determining factors that would lead one to replace sails rather than to recut? How can we, as owners, recognize the symptoms?

Recut or Replace

Bill, If the sail is so old(8-10years) or worn that the cloth is very soft it is probably not worth recutting. A recut on an old sail will not lasts very long as the cloth will continue to stretch and distort. If the cloth is still a bit firm recuts are a good way to extend the life of the sail. Generally I recommend recutting a sail once after it is a few years old. This will improve performance for a year or two before it needs to be replaced. Thanks, Bill Colombo Doyle Sailmakers
