I'm looking for some good books to help me understand, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot the various systems onboard - including electrical, diesel/mechanical, and plumbing. What does everybody recommend?

Nigel Calder

Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder. I found it easy to use and gave me a good understanding of how boat systems work and how to improve and maintain them.

This Old Boat

You can't go wrong with a copy of Don Casey's This Old Boat. Many good articles to help you with your projects.

Another good read...

...is a subscription to "Boatworks" that is put out by Sail Magazine. There are great DIY projects in there. It is an interesting mag for doing enhancement and DIY projects. But for understanding systems and reference I would recommend the Nigel Calder book.

first aid book/reference?

Thanks for the advice - I'll start with Calder's book. I see on Amazon that a 3rd edition was published in May 2005. What does everybody recommend for a first aid guide to keep on board (and perhaps provide a recommended list of items for a first aid kit)?
