I'm looking for some good books to help me understand, maintain, upgrade, and troubleshoot the various systems onboard - including electrical, diesel/mechanical, and plumbing. What does everybody recommend?
Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual by Nigel Calder. I found it easy to use and gave me a good understanding of how boat systems work and how to improve and maintain them.
...is a subscription to "Boatworks" that is put out by Sail Magazine. There are great DIY projects in there. It is an interesting mag for doing enhancement and DIY projects. But for understanding systems and reference I would recommend the Nigel Calder book.
Good Old Boat magazine: .goodoldboat.com/Good Old Boat magazine is about...Creating a community of sailors - Through our directory of sailing organizations and contacts, we're developing links between sailors.Offering a resource - By pooling the knowledge of our readers, we're creating the directory we all need: the suppliers of parts and services for our boats.Keeping our boats afloat - Our technical articles focus on maintenance and upgrade issues and give them the space they deserve.Celebrating older-model sailboats - We emphasize pride of ownership.
Thanks for the advice - I'll start with Calder's book. I see on Amazon that a 3rd edition was published in May 2005.What does everybody recommend for a first aid guide to keep on board (and perhaps provide a recommended list of items for a first aid kit)?
