What kind of mast?
if it is aluminum then forget wax. Aluminum quickly oxidizes to a dull gray and then stops. Once it is oxidized, there is nothing else that can happen to the mast. The exception is dissimilar metal corrosion (SS to Al) which is an issue and can be mitigated by the use of coatings. For a wood mast then wax is right out as you really need a varnish to protect it properly.

Bill, Aluminum to the best of my knowledge. This past weekend I saw a bunch of fellow "wind enthusiasts" doing what I thought was waxing their masts which led to my question. I have a 1989 33.5 so no doubt the oxidation to dull gray stage has set in. No need to worry about that then?

But its probably not bare aluminum
I agree with Bill if the mast is bare aluminum, but it probably isnt. Your mast is likely anodized. If you ask me wax does help anodized aluminum. Waxing it will provide some protection for the anodized coating and keep it looking newer and prevent discoloring. I did mine last time I had it stepped. Your favorite boat/car wax is fine.
